Summary0000927: [V0.13] Update text description in debian/control file
DescriptionThe control file is a text file used when building a Debian/Ubuntu package. Among other settings it includes a description about the software. This description is shown in a package manager (Synaptic, GDebi) and in the Ubuntu Software Center when one browses through the available software.

The current description is a few years old and needs updating. For example it says
"Extensible Open Source CAx program (alpha)"
...
"Editing and modeling features are currently somewhat limited."

We already agreed a few months ago to "upgrade" FreeCAD's status from alpha to beta. And the last statement of course is no longer true.
Additional InformationCurrent control file can be viewed here:

Should we close that?

Err, no... I forgot to take care of that one! The control file still says "Editing and modeling features are currently somewhat limited."

I would also like the description to be a little less technical. I will suggest a new description.

We could maybe take the description from the homepage?

Not a bad idea actually. Here's the text, only the first section.
What do others think? Should we create a forum topic?
==========
FreeCAD is a parametric 3D modeler. Parametric modeling allows you to easily modify your design by going back into your model history and changing its parameters. FreeCAD is open source (LGPL license) and completely modular, allowing for very advanced extension and customization.

FreeCAD is multiplatfom, and reads and writes many open file formats such as STEP, IGES, STL and others.

Maybe add something to the effect of the last line? It would go along with the beta status while offering assurances to potential users that it would be OK to check out. Should be fitting for 0.14 stable at any rate.

I am more in favor of Normand's version... Being still in development is a normal thing for opensource software...

I rather like quick61's addition, you don't agree?

I can confirm this is fixed on the PPA and in Master so it can be closed.
